How to learn to read from the movement of the lips?

on Tue Sep 18, 2018 2:14 pm
Lip-reading is a specific skill that requires a lot of patience in the first place. It never happened that the first attempt was successful, so you have to persistently and vigorously train to gain this skill. Below you will find tips on how to learn to read lips.

1
When watching TV, always pay attention to the lips of talking people. Start paying attention to your mouth by watching the news. TV presenters learn to open their mouths to speak clearly, so it's easier to read something  from the movement of their lips. Do not try to read cartoon lips, if you try - you'll see why.
2
Watch the other people's lips when they speak.
3
Watch yourself in the mirror, repeat the alphabet, lyrics or poems. Keep focusing on your lips all the time, observe how different they are when you make different sounds / words.

5
Divide words into syllables, notice how people close their mouths at the end of each syllable.

Tips
* When people shout, they open their mouths and it is very difficult to read what they are saying.
* Watch live people on TV. Drawing characters very often move their mouths only up and down without creating a real picture of words.
* Watching TV without a voice, you check how you are reading from the lips, but you have to be very careful, because if you watch one program or follow only one actor you can get some insights from its behavior and what is happening in the background. This will not help you learn to read lips.
* Music videos are not a good material to learn to read from the mouth, because in the songs, some syllables are often extended or the words are accented differently, so that when they say the lips are arranged differently.
* If you stand far away from someone, he will not notice that you are looking at his lips.
* If you stand close to someone, you may feel uncomfortable when you stare at his mouth all the time, so look away from time to time.
